Ancient Artifacts and their Mysteries

Well, I had a tough time filling out the ‘About me’ box on my profile but one thing that you probably didn’t know about me which I am totally into is mysteries especially of the ancient and unsolved kind. My interests range from conspiracy theories to aliens, time travellers and the fifth dimension. Or maybe, I am just really impressionable, and believe everything I read and see at face value. I don’t ask too many questions and don’t try to scratch the surface much. If  nothing, at least it makes for a fun read at the end of a long, boring day.

Listed below are some insane discoveries from the ancient world, that we, modern folks can’t make head or tail of. seriously, these are quite intriguing, especially for those not into this genre.

1. The Voynich Manuscript:

The Voynich Script is considered to be “The Most  Mysterious Manuscript in the World”. All that is known about the manuscript is that it is of European origin. Described as a magical or scientific text, nearly every page contains botanical, figurative, and scientific drawings of a provincial but lively character, drawn in ink with vibrant washes in various shades of green, brown, yellow, blue, and red. Wilfrid Voynich, after whom the script was named estimated that the Manuscript was created in the late 13th century. The manuscript is small, seven by ten inches, but thick with nearly 235 pages. It is written in an unknown script of which there is no known other instance in the world.

It is abundantly illustrated with awkward coloured drawings of::

  • unidentified plants;
  • what seems to be herbal recipes;
  • tiny naked women frolicking in bathtubs connected by intricate plumbing looking more like anatomical parts than hydraulic contraptions;
  • mysterious charts in which some have seem astronomical objects seen through a telescope, some live cells seen through a microscope;
  • charts into which you may see a strange calendar of zodiacal signs, populated by tiny naked people in rubbish bins.

Apparently, Voynich wanted to have the mysterious manuscript deciphered and provided photographic copies to a number of experts. However, despite the efforts of many well known cryptologists and scholars, the book remains unread. There are some claims of decipherment, but to date, none of these can be substantiated with a complete translation. Source:

Ancient Mystery: What could the ancients or the prankster have wanted to tell us? What could be written in it, why can’t anybody decipher this script? I for one am extremely curious about this. I just love the mystery behind this book. Not to mention the art! I could spend years immersed in the drawings and calligraphy alone. Tucked away in the corner of a dusty library, that would be heavenly.

2. The Antikythera Mechanism:

In 1901 divers working off the isle of Antikythera found the remains of a clocklike mechanism 2,000 years old. The mechanism now appears to have been a device for calculating the motions of stars and planets by Derek J. de Solla Price  [ From June 1959 Scientific American p.60-7 ]

 Corroded and crumbling from 2,000 years under the sea, its dials, gear wheels and inscribed plates present the historian with a tantalizing problem.  From the evidence of the fragments one can get a good idea of the appearance of the original object. Consisting of a box with dials on the outside and a very complex assembly of gear wheels mounted within, it must have resembled a well- made 18ih-century clock. Doors hinged to the box served to protect the dials, and on all available surfaces of box, doors and dials there were long Greek inscriptions describing the operation and construction of the instrument. At least 20 gear wheels of the mechanism have been preserved, including a very sophisticated assembly of gears that were mounted eccentrically on a turntable and probably functioned as a sort of epicyclic or differential, gear-system. What could this mechanism be used for? No clue!

3. The Baigong Pipes

In an area of China not known to ever contain people, let alone industry, there are three mysterious triangular openings on top of a mountain containing hundreds of ancient rusty iron pipes of unknown origin. Some of the pipes go deep into the mountain. Some of them go into a nearby salt water lake. There are more pipes in the lake, and more still running east-west along the lake shore. Some of the larger pipes are 40 cm in diameter, are of uniform size and are placed in what seems like purposeful patterns.
Oddly, the pipes are clean of debris despite being older than Zeus. This suggests that they were not simply shoved into the ground for the hell of it, but actually used for something. Oh, and did we mention the mountain is completely inhospitable to human life?
As usual, a faction of nutjobs believes the Baigong Pipes to be an ancient astronomy lab or even spacecraft launching site left by extraterrestrials. This is possible, since the pipes contain a proportion of silica close to what occurs on Mars. Of course, the manhole cover outside your house does also, so take that with a grain of salt.

4. The Giant Balls of Costa Rica

Costa Rica and a few surrounding areas are scattered with giant stone balls. They are smooth and perfectly spherical, or nearly so. Some of them are quite small, a few inches in diameter, but some of them are as large as eight feet in diameter weighing several tons.
They have been chiseled to perfection by persons unknown, despite the fact that Costa Rica is still not scheduled to enter the Bronze Age until 2013. The are balls everywhere and serve no apparent purpose, like a swing club on Gentlemen’s Night.Some of the balls have been blasted apart by locals hoping to find gold, coffee beans, or even babies. Some have been rolled around, but some are too heavy to move even with a bulldozer. Not that they have bulldozers in Costa Rica. About the most useful information anyone has gotten is that there are not, under any circumstance, any quarries anywhere near the balls. This information is actually useless considering the balls are carved from volcanic rock. Who knows In 1,000 years the eggs of the stone men will hatch, and their offspring will emerge to rule the Earth.

There are many more mysteries including the Baghdad battery, Crystal Skulls, Flower of life, The Iron Pillar of Delhi and the Bloop but I am suddenly feeling really tired right now and can’t be bothered to copy and paste anymore. You can check out for more of this and other related phenomena.

Maybe I’ll do a Part 2 version soon.
